Message from the principal
Welcome to our school website. We hope you will find our pages interesting and useful as we seek to provide up to date information about our school, our programs and our community.
Solway Primary School is positioned at the centre of an enthusiastic and active community. Parental involvement is highly valued, from School Council and its Sub-Committees, to the Parents’ and Friends’ Association, classroom helpers and a myriad of other important, voluntary roles.
Staff and parents team together to create a stimulating and supportive learning environment for Solway students, providing optimal conditions for their development into socially competent, environmentally aware, capable learners and effective communicators.
Student leadership development is an important component of our approach, as we seek to create confident and resilient young people. Our emphasis across the school on the ‘You Can Do It’ foundations of Getting Along, Organisation, Confidence, Persistence and Resilience, sits side by side the school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. A ‘restorative practice’ approach ensures that positive student relationships are at the forefront of playground and classroom interactions.
Parents, staff and students work together to implement our sustainability strategies as we work towards our 5 Star Accreditation as a ‘Sustainable School’. Recent developments include the establishment of our Wildlife Corridor, the installation of solar panels, new water-saving drinking fountains and regular ‘Environmental Tips’ placed in the school’s newsletter by members of the student Environment Team. We have achieved our first star! ….and are well on the way to the second!
The upcoming BER works, our Primary Schools of the 21st Century project, will see a new Library and Learning Centre established at the school, including new classrooms, a community meeting room and the refurbishment of 4 existing classrooms. Works are expected to commence soon and we eagerly await these exciting developments. The new buildings will nestle into our spacious and leafy school grounds and provide Solway students with flexible learning spaces designed to meet the needs of future learners.
Information and Communications Technology development is a critical component of student learning and the school’s commitment to this is evident in the positioning of interactive whiteboards in classrooms and our student skill development in ICT. In 2010 the school has invested in Laptop computers for our Year 3 – 6 students, providing effective tools for learning and investigation.
The school’s Integrated Inquiry approach, ensures that student interest and enthusiasm is harnessed to engage them in a stimulating, challenging curriculum. Whole school ‘throughlines’ define the conceptual development and direction of the Inquiry topics each term and align the curriculum across the school. This year they include: Community, Change, Sustainability and Systems. Our Year 5/6 Camp to Beechworth was a stimulus for students to explore ‘How has gold changed Victoria?’, while our Year 3/4 Urban Camp later in the year will be linked with the Inquiry unit on ‘Sustainability’.
Prep students are provided with the opportunity to investigate their learning through play. The sessions are structured so that students’ learning experiences are concentrated on a range of curriculum skills within a play based environment. This also involves speaking and listening skills as students reflect on their investigations individually and as a class.
During Terms 2 and 3 all students are participating in a circus skills program, which will develop fine and gross motor skills and important student teamwork and cooperative skills. This program will culminate in a ‘Circus Show’ in July for the whole school community.
